How do you know you’re in a healthy relationship?
According to the famed French writer François de La Rochefoucauld, it all comes down to how you deal with separation.
In his Morals and Maxims (1665) he wrote:
“Absence diminishes small loves and increases great ones. Like the wind blows out a candle, but fans a bonfire.”
In other words, absence is a great test of love.
Can you be loyal to your partner when they are gone? Are you able to communicate clearly and look forward to being reunited? Does going long-distance increase your bond? Then you’re going to be in a happy relationship.
But if youre relationship has issues, then those are likely to increase when you’re apart. You might not even realize them until you’ve had some time alone.
La Rochefoucauld believed that every period of absence was a test. Couples who loved each other could withstand periods apart, but some relationships wouldn’t be able to survive separation.
La Rochefoucauld’s conclusion is that separation can be good for a couple, but it can also ruin a relationship. A happy relationship is one in which you can spend time apart without growing apart.
